In recent years, many—especially within the Black community—have turned to ancestor worship as a way to reclaim cultural identity and connect with the past. On the surface, these practices may feel harmless, even healing. But beloved, we must ask: What does God say?

Scripture is clear—only God is worthy of our worship. While it’s natural to remember and honor those who came before us, seeking spiritual guidance, protection, or blessings from the dead crosses a line God never permits.

“There shall not be found among you... a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD…”
—Deuteronomy 18:10–12 (KJV)

The Heart Can Be Deceiving

Many are drawn to these practices not out of rebellion, but out of longing—to feel seen, rooted, and spiritually connected. But when that longing leads us away from God’s truth, it becomes dangerous.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
—Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV)

The enemy will use pain, curiosity, and even pride to lead hearts astray. What begins as “honoring” can quickly turn into idolatry—placing ancestors in the role only God should occupy.

Familiar Spirits: The Deception

The Bible warns us about familiar spirits—spiritual entities that impersonate the dead. These are not your loved ones. They are deceivers, luring people into false security and spiritual bondage.

“Regard not them that have familiar spirits… I am the LORD your God.”
—Leviticus 19:31 (KJV)

So What Does Biblical Honor Look Like?

God doesn’t ask us to erase our heritage. He calls us to honor it rightly:

  • Remember their legacy — Share stories and lessons passed down through generations.

  • Thank God for their lives — Give gratitude, not prayer, to those who came before.

  • Trust God for guidance — He alone is your refuge and protector.

“Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
—John 8:32 (KJV)

The Real Answer

You don’t have to choose between your heritage and holiness. In Christ, you receive a greater inheritance—one that can never be lost, distorted, or stolen.

“Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God.”
—Ephesians 2:19 (KJV)
